Andreas Fogarasi. Vasarely Go Home

"Vasarely Go Home" investigates two parallel events that took place in Budapest on October 18th, 1969. That day, Victor Vasarely, the internationally renowned artist of Hungarian origin, opened his large retrospective exhibition at the Műcsarnok/Kunsthalle in Budapest. While Hungarian avant-garde art of the day was banned–or at best tolerated–by the authorities, Vasarely’s exhibition was organized by government officials, and was an important public event that attracted a huge number of visitors. Although local artists had high expectations of the show, they were also skeptical in the light of such double standards.
The second–undocumented–event to take place that evening during the exhibition opening was a one-man protest by the artist János Major. He carried a small sign in his pocket that he disreetly showed to friends and aqcuaintances he met in the crowd: it read „Vasarely Go Home“.
