P74 TWENTY YEARS
It is very true that the small, independent organizations play an important role in art systems across the world. They are closest to everyday life and are therefore best acquainted with the charaster and demands of the art systems themselves. They are self-sown and flexible. The 1990s were a peculiar era in Slovenia. Turbulent and stormy, maily because of the war, the emergenceof new states, the many golden promises, but from a distance, above all, a time of lost opportunities and by no means a cuccess story as portrayed by politics of the time.
The P74 Gallery was created as an artist-run space, and latet the non-governmental Zavod PARASITE was founded within which the gallery has been operating since 1997. When we opened a new space on the outskirts, there was virtually no production and exhibition space in Ljubljana that would systematically present the production of the young generation. We wanted to expand a space that would be open for artistic work, exploration, experimentation. At the same time, it was also a new type of a discursive exhibition space that highlighted research and other additional activities of other spaces was essential. We started atypically, with workshops. With that kind of action, we announced that we are more than a space for hanging artworks. The workshops have successfully linked different generations of artists into joint creativity and learning.
