Vlado Martek. This Book is Better Than Ideal

The publication This Book is Better Than Ideal presents a closer insight into Vlado Martek’s use of a wide variety of media, concepts and topics that share a mutual characteristic – the artist's experimental use of language. It offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s oeuvre from the 1970s to the present, including his breakthrough into the art scene, after graduating in literature and philosophy, and his work as a member of the Group of Six Artists. The publication reveals Martek’s attempt to extend the boundaries of artistic expression through different presentation modes and mediations of art, including performative poetry, media deconstruction and the act of breaking into public space.
The book features over 240 reproductions of Martek’s works, presenting the wide diversity of his artistic production: the artist’s so-called pre-poetry stage (reflections on poetry and its elementary processes, sonnets); his actions and agitations in urban environments; his book production, from so called poetic objects and lyrical folios to artist’s books and samizdats; his pictogram alphabet works (featuring an alphabet of his own invention); his maps; his statements on glass and mirrors; and his reflections on photography.
Next to the texts by the curators of the retrospective Exhibition with Many Titles, Alenka Gregorič and Ksenija Orelj, the publication compiles essays by Hubert Besacier, Nadežda Elezović, Daniel Grún, Nikica Klobučar, Lev Kreft and an interview by Darko Šimičić.
