2019/2020: Principle of Equality–Open Studio

“Principle of Equality” is a term that the Polish polymath, curator, writer, and philosopher-activist Anka Ptaszkowska used as a guiding concept for her seminar at the École supérieure d’Arts et Médias in Caen, France, where she taught during the 1980s and 1990s. Intuitively, equality is the twin sister of freedom. And her proclamation of the “Principle of Equality” within an esteemed educational institution set the tone for this program, which diverged from the idea of a predetermined outcome. Instead, it opened up a space for uninhibited practice, individual or collective and dependent on the participant.
The program “Principle of Equality” has continued along the political lines drafted by Ptaszkowska, who gave an inaugural lecture at the Academy on 19 March 2019.
As part of the seminar “Principle of Equality”, the exhibition “Wild Spoerri Rosenstein” (curated by Adam Szymczyk) took place from 20–25 November 2019 in the apartments of Hotel am Brillantengrund in Vienna. It included works by Elisabeth Wild, Daniel Spoerri, and Erna Rosenstein, as well as by students Gleb Amankulov, Bob Schatzi Hausmann, Raúl Itamar, Nestor Janković, Robert Jolly, Julia Karpova, Yul Koh, Anthia Loizou, Dean Maassen, Paul Makowsky, Swarnaly Mitra Rini, Lorena Moreno Vera, Kamryn Pariso, Laura Pirgie, Ursula Pokorny, Michael Reindel, Camila Rhodi, Hanna Schibel, Firas Shehadeh, and Jiří Tomíček.
