During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Marcus Geiger was interested in materials such as terry cloth and needle felt—fabrics used in towels, bathrobes and suits. As materials typical of domestic environments and hence associated with comfort, their use by Geiger within an art context lends them an ironic quality. Geiger’s colored towels are intended to be hung on standardized iron nails, with aesthetic components such as height and color selection likewise being important. The number of towels depends on the wall used as the background as well as on the spatial context. Regarding this work, the artist remarks: “A towel is a towel, recognizable and defined as such. Art is an assertion.” His inspiration for this work was a special offer in a Viennese supermarket during the 1980s that was advertised with the words: “So many beautiful colors, and very cuddly!” A black-and-white photograph of this work from the artist’s studio was employed in the design of the poster for his 1988 solo exhibition at the Galerija Studentskog / kulturnog centra in Belgrade. And in 1989, this work was exhibited in a Viennese apartment through the mediation of Vadim Zakharov, Peter Pakesch, and Martin Prinzhorn. W.S.
