The flag motif and associations with the color red in public space constitute a trope that Marcus Geiger has used and reused over the decades. Since 2017, Geiger has produced several red flags with circular holes that are not always centrally positioned. The artist is known for ironically inverting the functional use of traditional materials, which he does mainly in architectural settings. While a red flag with a hole could be viewed as an inverted Japanese flag with the red sun missing, it is up to the beholders to make up stories in their own minds. Gestures and signs intertwine in Geiger’s focus on simple materials whose use and meaning are thereby transferred into the realm of artistic recontextualization. W.S.
