Franz Schuh

Franz Schuh, Vienna, 3 May 2022

“For many years, I flew entirely under the radar. That was an advantage!”

“Interviews, when they’re successful, are essays with two people.” It’s thus that Franz Schuh, recently recovered from a serious illness, spontaneously turns this conversation into an essay about forgotten texts, about how he once unwittingly invented Bourdieu, and about readings by Helmut Qualtinger as “decisive information.” “Vom Guten, Wahren und Schlechten” [Of the Good, the True, and the Bad], released in 2022 by the publisher Sonderzahl, is a compendium of texts that had never before been published in book format. As is stated therein: “Salvation—to finally, on one’s deathbed, say something that interests the entire world.” But who needs redemption, anyway…
