Alexander Horwath

Alexander Horwath, Vienna, 6 October 2022

“The joy of sorting the wheat from the chaff.”

As a film critic, Alexander Horwath was a founding editorial team member at the Austrian daily “Der Standard”—in which capacity, as well as in his work as director of the Vienna International Film Festival and then the Austrian Film Museum, he played a significant role in taking the perception and presentation of cinema to a new level. In this conversation at the hotel InterContinental Vienna, Horwath speaks above all about his roots as a cinephile and his curatorial experiences during the 1980s and 1990s. He explains why working as a journalist ceased to be enough for him quite early on and lays out what he considers essential to film’s quality as a shared experience and physical occurrence.
