“The word ‘I’ is an image.”
“Electricity has always played an important role in my work.” This was the thinking behind VALIE EXPORT’s choice of the historic electrical substation in the Viennese district of Favoriten. There, she muses about “ephemeral material with a powerful presence,” ways in which her life’s work might best be archived, diaries and other notes, and works that she hasn’t (yet) managed to realize. “To me, words are images,” she says. “The word ‘I’ is an image, for example. We think in images. Our planet is a place where thinking occurs in images.” Her ultimate conclusion: “My output in old age is age itself.”
