The artist’s book “Energy No. 9” was published on the occasion of Mangelos’s exhibition at Galerija Dubrava in Zagreb in 1979. This exhibition grew out of the importance that Mangelos attached to theories of energy and the “Grundform der Materie” [basic form of matter], which is indestructible since it always changes from one form to another. In the notes that he kept in his “Jahresbuch” [yearbook] in 1971, Mangelos listed the project “Einwortausstellung”—an exhibition consisting of a single word, in several languages and different scripts. It was the word “energy”, written on boards and globes in the Glagolitic, Latin, Cyrillic, and Gothic alphabets. B.S.
