The performance “Triangle”, which Sanja Iveković documented in photographs, was developed during president Tito’s visit to Zagreb in 1979. Ignoring the official instructions which prohibited the presence of citizens behind windows and on terraces of buildings, the artist was sitting on her balcony and simulated the act of masturbation. Although she could not be seen from the street, she was aware of the fact that the surveillance teams on the roofs could observe her presence. Questioning the moment of the power demonstration in the public space and the simultaneous suppression of acts in the private sphere, provoking the police action, the artist exposed the restraints of individual decisions and collective regulations. Reading the book “Elites and Society” written by Tom Bottomore, drinking whisky and pretending to masturbate, Iveković challenged the redefinition of the boundaries between her own body and collective processes.
