In this work, the artist used color paper in the colors of the national flag of former Yugoslavia. But instead of including the red star in the middle, the artist glued on stubble from a man’s beard (which she had collected over a period of days) in the shape of a curved triangle. There was a law against tampering with the symbols on the national flag, so Ivekovic’s sexual allusion was obviously meant as an insult. It was only in 2007, as part of the exhibition “On Unknown Works” at Gallery Nova in Zagreb, that this work was finally exhibited for the first time. B.S.
