Josef Dabernig’s “Proposal for a New Kunsthaus, Not Further Developed” references the inauguration of the Kunsthaus Graz in 2003, which had been built as a new structure after many years of debate. Questioning modernist and postmodernist modes of representation, the artist chose photographs from his personal archive that he originally meant to have presented as a (now-archaic) analog slide projection. Elements of facades and interiors realized in a variety of 20th-century architectural styles with a focus on Eastern modernism form the basis for a sarcastically ironic reflection concerning what can be newly built or altered when contemplating such an architectonic endeavor. The slideshow poses questions concerning what is needed to maintain such a venue with exhibition and event spaces and their surroundings. At the same time, it presents visual sketches of the past as detailed historic evidence. W.S.
