“Prohibited Area to Any External Utterance” was a performance that Lia Perjovschi mounted in Costinești, a summer resort at the Black Sea coast. Dressed in a tight bodysuit, she performed at the beach on a stage that she transformed into a picketing space. Positioned on this otherwise-empty stage in front of Hotel Forum, the artist—her mouth covered by adhesive tape—communicated by means of body language. Starting from a prone position on the bare boards, she picked up a black plastic bag from which she proceeded to remove crumpled paper balls that revealed secret messages when unfolded. She then threw these paper balls into her audience of tourists, artists, and students. With this performance, Perjovschi referred to places restricted or placed off-limits by the authorities. In keeping with this idea, the communication here took place in a silent and almost unnoticeable manner. W.S.
