For her work “Women in Art – Women in Yugoslavian Art,” Sanja Iveković took a page from an issue of Flash Art entitled “Women in Art.” This page shows photographs of internationally renowned women artists. Underneath each photo is a caption citing the depicted woman’s name. On the opposite page, Iveković drew women and grouped them in the same manner as the portraits shown on the Flash Art page—albeit without their names. Her page is entitled “Women in Yugoslavian Art.” The fact that there are no names underneath these portraits effectively anonymizes these women and hints at problematic aspects of 1970s Yugoslavia, whose artists—especially female artists—remained largely or entirely unknown to the international public.
